This Regional Spelling Bee Winner is Motivated by Success This Regional Spelling Bee Winner is Motivated by Success Vihaan, 10-years-old, Math Level K Reading Level HII In 2018, 28 of the brightest students in second through eighth grade, gathered to compete in the Central Texas Spelling Bee. Vihaan was one of three students left standing in the 40th round of the spelling bee. The pressure was on as just one wrong letter could immediately disqualify the young competitors. âCommensurate. C-O-M-M-E-N-S-U-R-A-T-E. Commensurate,â Vihaan said confidently. The correct spelling of this 12-letter adjective made Vihaan the youngest student to ever win the Central Texas Spelling Bee. Vihaanâs motivation to compete is fueled by his own success. Ahead of the regional spelling bee, Vihaan challenged himself to read one million words, and dedicated early mornings to practice spelling them. Feeling confident in his win, Vihaan went on to compete at the 2018 Scripps National Spelling Bee. Vihaanâs hard work proved to pay off again as he tied for 42nd place out of 519 students. âMy success in competing in multiple spelling bee competitions reinforces the fact that hard work and consistency are great virtues to have,â said Vihaan. âKumon gives me the confidence to take on challenges that seem daunting to others.â Outside of the classroom, Vihaan enjoys hitting the courts to play tennis â" putting his agility and focus to the test. With a passion for the performing arts, Vihaan is an accomplished pianist and even takes the stage in recitals with his dance group. Vihaan was one of 56 students selected for Kumonâs 3rd Annual Student Conference in Chicago, Illinois. âI was so pumped when I found out I was selected to attend the Student Conference,â said Vihaan. âI really enjoyed my time at the conference and made so many new friends. I especially loved the Math on Mars activity to show off my skills!â Vihaan and the rest of the attendees had the opportunity to learn from each other through educational activities designed to foster team building, group discussion, critical thinking and creativity. Vihaan shares how Kumon helps him in and out of the classroom, and his plans for the future. How has Kumon helped you outside of the classroom? Kumon has helped me improve my time management skills. Iâm able to balance my extracurricular activities and my homework with ease. How has Kumon helped you academically? I have always loved learning new things, and Kumon has helped me build upon that. My learning skills have really evolved since I enrolled. If you could sum up your Kumon experience in one word, what would it be? Rewarding. Whoâs your biggest inspiration and why? My biggest inspiration is professional tennis player, Rafael âRafaâ Nadal. I look up to him because he has been dedicated and working hard since he was only four years old. What do you want to be when you grow up? I would like to become a tennis player and a software designer. What advice would you give to kids just starting Kumon?
